International Coordination Committee (ICC) for the Safeguarding of the Cultural Heritage of Iraq
UNESCO Director-General has been authorized by the Executive Board of UNESCO, meeting in its 167th session (Decision 9.2) to create an International Coordinating Committee for the Safeguarding of Iraqi Cultural Heritage.
The Committee's role is to review various ongoing activities for the rehabilitation of the national cultural heritage according to the priorities set by the Iraqi authorities and to ensure that international assistance is implemented in compliance with the highest international standards.
The Committee is composed of international experts and representatives of foundations and intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations that fund or implement activities for the safeguarding of the cultural heritage of Iraq.

This 3rd Plenary Session ended with an appeal to the international community to help stop illicit excavations, looting and trafficking of Iraqi cultural property. At the conclusion of this meeting, the Committee recommended launching a one-year awareness-raising campaign to alert the international community of the responsibilities and penalties for illicit trafficking of cultural property originating from Iraq. - 2nd ICC Session: UNESCO Headquarters, 22-23 June 2005
