Museums and Creativity
As a socially-engaged institution, the modern museum is intrinsically linked to creativity and innovation. Museums are expected not only to preserve and conserve their collections but also to exhibit in an innovative and creative way for the visitor. This creativity is necessary to the sustainability and development of the museum as a living and engaging platform for dialogue.
UNESCO’s recent projects in the field of museums such as the “Revitalising World Heritage Site Museums” pilot project in Cambodia, Laos and Viet Nam and the “Virtual Museum for Intercultural Dialogue” emphasise the importance of building professional skills in developing exhibitions and public programmes in an innovative and creative way to ensure the sustainability of museums.
This webpage also serves as a resource of initiatives being made outside of UNESCO which concern creativity in the museum.
