Second Workshop under the UNESCO/Japan FIT project “Revitalising World Heritage Site Museums for a Better Interpretation of Living Heritage Sites in Cambodia, Laos and Viet Nam: Training for World Heritage Site Museums"

Visit to the Vat Phou site

After the launching phase of 2011, the first meeting in Siem Reap (July 2011) and the First Intensive Workshop in Hanoi (November-December 2011), the Second Workshop took place in Siem Reap, Cambodia and in Pakse, Laos from 10 to 20 May 2012.

At the end of the First Workshop, it was decided between the participants that the museums of the project elaborate a joint sub-regional exhibition on the following 3 themes:

  1. Natural World.
  2. Trade and Exchange.
  3. An individual subject-theme developed by each museum to highlight their collection.

The overall objective of this exhibition is to better explain the outstanding universal values of the associated World Heritage sites, especially by highlighting the interconnections between these sites and populations, as well as the role of South East Asia in global history.

The Second Workshop brought together the research contents and accumulated information provided by scientific coordinators and the participating site-museums, and through intensive sessions led by experts; the participants elaborated the sub-regional exhibition and educational programme during the 10 day workshop. A field trip to the archaeological Site of Angkor and Museum of Wat Phu in Champassak, Pakse, also took place.

The workshop gathered Directors, Curators and Conservators from the 9 site-related museums; 5 experts in the field of exhibition management, exhibition design, history of South-East Asia, illicit trafficking in cultural property; and the UNESCO team.
