Forming an integral part of the conference programme, a series of exhibits provided a platform for knowledge and experience sharing on ESD.
Exhibits, from around the world, showcased a wide variety of innovative practices and policy approaches to stimulate new ideas and new thinking around ESD.

25 successful ESD projects from around the world were selected to present their work in the Atrium throughout the Conference:

Africa

• Faith-based education for sustainable development, Kenya
  This project focuses on building capacity of schools, faith groups, government and civil society groups and organizations to integrate religious wisdom into ESD, through formal and non-formal education.
• Learning and living for a sustainable future (NaDEET), Namibia
  At the NaDEET Centre, children and adult participants learn first-hand about sustainable living, biodiversity and the balance between humans and the environment. They learn not just by seeing and hearing, but by doing and living.
• Éducation environnementale et pépinière municipale de Dakar, Senegal
  This project provides training in nursery techniques and micro gardening to unemployed youth and women in the neighbourhood, to grow plants with which to green the city. Pedagogical visits and activities are organized for school children.
• SADC REEP training courses, South Africa
  The programme intends to enhance the learning experience of learners, contextualize and situate learning, connecting the experiences of learners with curriculum demands, while at the same time connecting the local with the regional and global.
• University of Swaziland: a whole-university approach, Swaziland
  This project shows how the University of Swaziland implemented ESD, informed by the Mainstreaming Environment and Sustainability in African Universities (MESA) initiative.

Arab States

• Queen Rania teacher academy ESD training network, Jordan
  This initiative focuses on capacity building for teachers in Jordan and the Arab region in ESD teaching and learning approaches. It aims to promote the quality of educational programmes and reorient classroom teaching to address ESD.
• ESD educational and training activities, Lebanon
  Five educational packages/learning activities have been designed for use in classrooms by teachers and students in a collaborative environment, and cover the three ESD dimensions: environment, economy and social. The activities reflect a strong desire to help enable citizens to reach self-sustainability and independence, emphasizing  the importance of environmental preservation and encouraging the quest for education.
• Environnement et développement durable Maroc, Morocco
  The programme seeks to disseminate sustainable development concepts to students, parents and communities, to build capacities of teachers and educators, as well as create a network of environmental clubs.
• Programme enviromobile, Tunisia
  The project consists of a mobile learning unit (in a bus), accompanied by a media and advocacy campaign. It mobilizes students, teachers, parents, local municipalities and NGOs to learn about sustainable development and environmental conservation.
• Eco-Schools UAE and Be’ati Watani, United Arab Emirates
  The Eco-Schools programme aims to raise students’ awareness on sustainable development issues through classroom study as well as school and community action. Be'ati Watani is an online bilingual environmental education resource.

Asia and the Pacific

• ESD Experimental Schools, China
  The project focuses on learning more about energy-saving, emission-reduction and sustainable development issues, and to facilitate setting up of exemplary schools in terms of energy-saving and emission-reduction.
• Handprint: action towards sustainability, India
  Handprint is a symbol of – or measure for – and commitment to positive action towards sustainability. It is a measure of what we can do individually and together to restore the balance between consumption and the planet's support capacity.
• Green schools action project, Indonesia
  The programme promotes Climate Change Education. It aims to give educators and students ownership of the issues that need resolution and a sense of empowerment over the environmental challenges they face.
• ASPnet in Japan promoting ESD, Japan
  The focus on ESD by each UNESCO Associated School varies depending on the surrounding conditions and students’ interests, such as environment, multi-cultural understanding, local development, health, energy, peace, human rights, etc.
• Climate change education for teachers, Kiribati
  The project seeks to build capacities in the education system with the education resource Learning about climate change the Pacific way, and to develop teacher professional development on climate change education.

Europe and North America

• Green pack, Central and Eastern Europe
  This project includes the development and implementation of an innovative multimedia educational kit for students and teachers. Based on its initial success, the Green Pack has been introduced in 18 countries in Europe and Asia.
• ESD in Germany, Germany
  A number of bodies were set up to implement the Decade and facilitate the exchange between all stakeholders involved in ESD in Germany, creating a platform of discussion and mutual learning, as well as an ESD award scheme.
• GroenGelinkt – ICT platform for ESD, the Netherlands
  This Dutch ICT platform enables children, teachers, educators, parents, and child caregivers to enjoy nature and learn about sustainability. It aims to improve access to activities and teaching materials in formal and non-formal ESD.
• Basque country school agenda 21, Spain
  Based on the participation of the school community (teachers, students, families and non-teaching staff), this programme is developed in relation to an environmental issue such as biodiversity, climate change, water, energy, consumption, or mobility.
• Education for sustainability – WWF Sweden, Sweden
  The programme aims to stimulate the reorientation of education sectors and communities towards a focus on ESD, through WWF model communities in East Africa, Cameroon, Madagascar, India and Indonesia.

Latin America and the Caribbean

• Colectivos Educadores/Municipio Educador Sustentable, Brazil
  This group of people brings with them the support of their institutions to a process of educational collective action in a given territory, helping share information on environmental education and the environmental challenges faced by all inhabitants.
• Red Nacional de Jóvenes de Ambiente, Colombia
  The National Environment Youth Network develops activities of exchange and communication between young people and all stakeholders through information, participation and management for sustainable development processes.
• Earth Charter, Costa Rica
  The Earth Charter is recognized as an important ethical framework for sustainable development (UNESCO 32C/Resolution 17). Many educators around the world use the Earth Charter as a way to bring ethics for sustainability to the classroom.
• Proyecto del Mar Caribe Observando la Arena, Dominican Republic
  ‘Sandwatch’ is an educational process, through which students and members of the community can learn and work hand-in-hand, to critically evaluate the problems and conflicts facing the littoral environment and develop strategies for dealing with them.
• Preserva HXQ. Sustainable community, Mexico
  This project seeks to sustain, restore and protect Huixquilucan Municipality´s natural resources. It promotes the vision of a more sustainable community through dialogue, education, public awareness and training activities.
