Partners and Networks

An effective response to HIV and AIDS requires the mobilisation and collaboration of all sectors of society. UNESCO works in close collaboration with its Member States, UNAIDS cosponsors, civil society and the private sector.

UNESCO also convenes the UNAIDS Inter-Agency Task Team (IATT) on Education, which brings together over 30 partner organizations.

Member States

UNESCO works closely with its Member States in the design, development and implementation of programmes and activities on HIV and AIDS.

Most Member States have established Permanent Delegations to UNESCO (based in UNESCO Paris) which undertake liaison between the Organization and their governments.
Almost all Member States have established a National Commission for UNESCO (based in the Member States). The UNESCO National Commissions are national cooperating bodies set up by the Member States for the purpose of associating their governmental and non-governmental bodies with the work of the Organization.
Member States and Associate Members designate one or several Ministries responsible for relations with UNESCO and/or Ministries in UNESCO's fields of competence.

Bilateral and multi-lateral agencies

UNESCO values its relationship with bilateral and multilateral agencies.
Some notable collaborations include:

  • UNESCO and OPEC Fund for International Development joint project on HIV and AIDS Education
  • UNESCO and Japanese Funds-In-Trust projects on building education sector capacity to respond to HIV and AIDS

Civil society

UNESCO supports the meaningful engagement of civil society organizations in the response to HIV and AIDS, in particular at country level.

Private sector

The engagement of the private sector at all levels is vital in the effectiveness of any national response to HIV and AIDS.

UNESCO's collaboration with the private sector includes, most notably the agreement with the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and joint programme with L’Oréal.
