Fourth Annual Meeting of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF)
Hosted by the Government of Egypt the fourth annual IGF Meeting was held from 15-18 November at the Maritim Sharm El Sheikh International Congress Centre (SHICC) in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.
The IGF is a forum for multi-stakeholder dialogue on public policy related to Internet governance issues, such as the Internet's sustainability, robustness, security, stability and development.
The purpose of the IGF is to maximize the opportunity for open and inclusive dialogue and the exchange of ideas; create feedback loops between the different types of sessions; create opportunities to share best practices and experiences; listen, dialogue and learn as well as identify key themes that would, in the future, benefit from the multistakeholder perspective of the IGF.
The IGF welcomes organisations and persons from diverse relevant expertise and geographical areas around the world.
The meeting was open to all World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) accredited entities, as well as other institutions and persons with proven expertise and experience in matters related to Internet Governance.
The overall theme of the meeting was Internet Governance – Creating Opportunities for All. The theme reflected the basic purpose of the IGF to develop a common understanding of how to maximize the opportunities the Internet offers for all nations and peoples, and how to address the risks and challenges, while also raising awareness of the development dimension of Internet governance.
A broad-based consultation processed through the Multistakeholder Advisory Group generated the following proposed agenda for the meeting:
Managing critical internet resources;
Security, openness and privacy;
Access and diversity;
Internet governance in light of WSIS principles;
Emerging issues – impact of social networks; and
Taking stock and the way forward – desirability of the continuation of the Forum.
