One of the flagship activities of UNESCO Kabul Kabul has been the strengthening of news production for the national broadcaster, Radio and Television of Afghanistan (RTA) .

UNESCO has supported the development of editorial and production skills for RTA's radio and television departments in Kabul, Herat, Mazar-e Sharif and Kandahar. The support given by UNESCO was crucial in enabling RTA to run real-time coverage of the country's first Presidential election in 2005, and UNESCO has been at the forefront of activities to promote a public service broadcasting role for RTA.
