Radioteca is an online portal for Latin American radio stations that was set up with the financial support of UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC). This service offers now more than 5,000 downloadable audios and has over 85,000 visitors per month, with an average of 3,000 hits per day. Most of the 1,500 registered radio stations are based in Latin America; some of them are located in the Caribbean.
The project was the result of a Plan of Action adopted at UNESCO’s conference ‘The Latin American Audio-Visual Landscape: Good Ideas and Best Practices for the Production and Promotion of Local Content’, organized in Guadalajara (Mexico) in 2005.
Created by the Radialistas Apasionadas y Apasionados in 2007, Radioteca aims to enrich and support the programming of local and community radios in the Latin American region. Furthermore, this online audio bank offers a secure space to share audio content files and serves as a repository for historical audio archives, thus further developing the audio heritage and communication capacities of Latin American societies.
Users of the service include community radios, rural and local radio station journalists, radio broadcasters, reporters, consumers of audio, human rights organizations, ecological groups, educational institutions and also interested individuals.
Radio stations are not only able to download the audio materials for free but also to actively participate in professional exchange spaces, such as blogs and opinion fora. In addition, 70 training manuals and pedagogical materials have been collected and put online as resource tools for radio stations.
The project also succeeded in mobilizing additional funding which allowed upgrading the ICT capacities of 100 community radio stations. They were provided with server space and web page facilities which empowered them to access and disseminate content online. 300 additional radio stations shall be equipped in the next three months thanks to the support of UNESCO’s Latin American offices.
