World Conference on Science 1999
In June 1999, UNESCO and the International Council for Science (ICSU) organized the World Conference on Science in Budapest (Hungary). For the first time, the world’s governments and the international scientific community gathered under one roof to prepare a new ‘social contract’ for science in the twenty-first century.

The World Conference on Science gave rise to a number of global initiatives sponsored by UNESCO. Among these are:
- World Science Day for Peace and Development, which in turn gave rise to the Israeli-Palestinian Science Organization

In November 2009, the theme of the World Science Forum was a 10-year review of follow-up to the World Conference. The Forum analysed how many countries had espoused the new social contract for science over the previous decade and to what effect. (More)
