The ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology (AAET) was created in 2004 to promote the science, engineering and technology fields in the member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and among youth. In partnership with the UNESCO Engineering Initiative, the AAET are collaboratively working on projects with academics in Africa.

A member of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), FAEO represents the interests of its five regional bodies in Africa. There are currently 16 member countries in FAEO who work to promote engineering as a means to socio-economic development. In partnership with the African Network of Scientific and Technological Institutions (ANSTI) and UNESCO, FAEO will participate in the 5th Conference of Vice Chancellors, Provosts and Deans of Science, Engineering and Technology (COVIDSET 2013). This event will take place in Botswana and will provide a platform for representatives of FAEO to exchange ideas with other participants in order to advance Africa’s competitiveness in the science, engineering and technology sectors.

CAETS is a non-governmental organization whose member academies can be found in 26 countries. This Council offers technology- and engineering-related policy advice to governments on a variety of topics including sustainable economic and social development. They aim to encourage the development of engineering education and improve the public’s understanding of engineering and technological sciences.

FIDIC draws its members from more than 90 countries. It actively disseminates policy statements and papers on a number of topics, especially sustainable engineering. It also supports the development of young professionals. According to the 2010 UNESCO Engineering Report (pdf), “Consulting engineering…is a major industry with an annual revenue of around US$490 billion, and helps generate half of the world’s GDP” (p. 70). Therefore, FIDIC is a vital organization in increasing the social awareness of the importance of engineers to socio-economic development.

In 1968, WFEO, a non-governmental organization, was created under the sponsorship of UNESCO in order to discuss engineering matters on an international level. Today, WFEO represents around 20 million engineers in over 90 countries offering policy advice on issues pertaining to the engineering sciences, particularly sustainable development. In partnership with the UNESCO Engineering Initiative, WFEO has been involved in promoting engineering education and skills development through the Compendium of Capacity-Building Guidelines and through youth conferences, including the 2013 Young Engineers Future Leaders Convention. This event was held in Kuwait and focused on three topics, engineering and technology, global international relations and youth. Also, on International Women’s Day in 2012, WFEO and UNESCO met with female engineers from Côte d’Ivoire, Kuwait, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Spain to discuss ways of retaining women in engineering. Lastly, WFEO and UNESCO are involved in promoting sustainable engineering in order to tackle contemporary global challenges, such as climate change and disaster and risk reduction. Through their recently created World Engineering Forum, WFEO supports the importance of collaborative efforts for sustainable development.
