Technical assistance

UNESCO, because of its expertise in the area of ethics teaching, is also providing technical assistance at the request of Member States or universities, organizations and institutions.

Cooperation with Saudi Arabia

On the 27th February 2007, a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between National Guard Health Affairs, King Saud Bin Abdulaziz University of Health Sciences in Riyadh and UNESCO.

The focus of the agreement is to develop teaching programs in the area of bioethics. In February 2007 several symposia on ethics teaching have been organised, for example in King Fahd National Guard Hospital in Riyadh and in King Khalid National Guard Hospital in Jeddah where the UNESCO Ethics Education Programme have been discussed.

In King Saud Bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAU-HS) in Riyadh, a Curriculum Advisory Committee has been established in order to develop the structure and content of the postgraduate bioethics qualifications in KSAU-HS. The aim is to start a bioethics course in January 2008 for PhD students in the Medical and Health Sciences Research Center. The course will also have some places for students from the region. The course will be developed with the assistance of UNESCO and will be based on the proposal for a core course in bioethics which is currently developed by an ad hoc committee of experts from IBC, COMEST, TWAS and WMA. In November 2007, UNESCO will provide an Ethics Teachers Training Course for the teachers of this course in Riyadh.
