24th African Union Summit adopts a decision on Culture of Peace

On the occasion of the 24th African Union Summit held in Addis Ababa on 31 January 2015 under the theme “Year of Women’s Empowerment and Development towards Africa’s Agenda 2063”, the Assembly of Heads of States and Governments requested the AU Commission to explore with UNESCO and the Government of Côte d’Ivoire the possibility of creating a “School of Peace”.

During the Summit, the Assembly also requested the Member States to take all appropriate measures in consultation with UNESCO and Government of Republic of Angola to co-organize a biannual Pan-African Forum for a Culture of Peace in Africa, “Biennale of Luanda“, foreseen to take place in September 2015. The Assembly also welcomed the progress that continues to be made in terms of peace-building and post-conflict reconstruction in the Comoros, Madagascar, as well as the ongoing reconciliation process in Côte d'Ivoire and Guinea-Bissau.

The Assembly welcomed the continued efforts taken towards the full operationalization of the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA).
