Who are we ?

The Africa Department is headed by an Assistant Director-General who is in charge of ensuring the Africa Department’s missions are carried out.

Its missions are, inter alia

  • coordinating Global Priority Africa and its related reports and major initiatives;
  • following-up the implementation of Priority Africa operational strategy in close collaboration with the various Organization’s entities and external partners;
  • serving as the focal point for UNESCO’s relations with African Member States, the African Union and Africa’s Regional Economic Communities;
  • supporting the five multisectoral regional offices, and the category 1 institutes active in Africa.

The Department implements, through its dedicated Unit for social mobilization, a strategy aimed at strengthening partners’ support in the framework of Priority Africa, and fostering a shared understanding of Priority Africa by all stakeholders for a better visibility.

The Department raises and coordinates future-oriented thinking on current and future challenges of Africa through forward-looking research and studies to ensure coherence and efficiency in implementing Priority Africa. This will involve experts from Africa and outside Africa. To this end, the Department includes a contextual analysis and prospective Unit.

The Division for cooperation, intersectoral follow-up and partnership is tasked with coordinating the cooperation with Member States and African regional organizations, reinforcing partnerships for the operational strategy for Priority Africa and following-up with various actors within the Organization concerning the implementation of flagship programmes and other related initiatives.
