The CIPDH celebrates the agreement between FARC and the Colombian government on conflict victims

The International Centre for Human Rights Promotion (CIPDH), UNESCO's Category II Centre, remarks the agreement that took place in Havana, Cuba, between the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC-EP) and the Colombian government that establishes peace tribunals and a reconciliation commission to provide justice for victims. This meeting became a giant step looking for peace in this South American country.

Furthermore, the CIPDH emphasizes that this agreement is in line with UNESCO’s Declaration and Action Programme on a Culture of Peace which states that "peace is not only the absence of conflict, but requires a positive, dynamic participatory process where dialogue is encouraged and conflicts are solved in a spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation".

The agreement considers an integral system of truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-repetition for satisfying victims' rights, of those who have suffered abuses in this conflict. So, the CIPDH highlights the common decision to create a Commission for the Clarification of Truth, Coexistence, and Non-Repetition and a Search Unit for Disappeared Persons by the conflict. The decision to create these institutions aligns with international treaties on Human Rights, especially those that guarantee People’s right to Truth. Also, it defines them as key points for durable peace and sustainable development based on Human Rights, not only in Colombia. CIPDH considers that the whole region is consolidated as a “Peace Zone”, as declared by the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) on its II Summit held in January 2014.
