Call for applications: Introductory Courses on Conservation and Restoration of Archaeological Finds 2015

The International Centre for Underwater Archaeology (ICUA) is launching two courses on the restoration and conservation of underwater archaeological finds from Underwater Environments. They will be held in Zadar, Croatia on 16- 27 November and 30 November – 11 December 2015 respectively. The courses are organized with the support of the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, Venice (Italy). The deadline for applications is 2 October 2015, 12:30 pm.

The two courses will follow the same programme, conducted under the supervision of mentors at the workshops of the International Centre for Underwater Archaeology (ICUA) in Zadar. Over two weeks, trainees will be provided with an introduction to conservation-restoration theory and techniques.

The training consists of one theoretical and one practical component, subject to the interests, abilities and knowledge of the selected trainees, which will give them the opportunity to work hands on in the various phases of the conservation-restoration of small objects. They will work with the various materials treated at the three main workshops, dedicated to metal, ceramic and glass, and organic finds.

Four trainees will be selected for each course. Applications are open to citizens of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Montenegro, Republic of Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and Turkey. Geographical and gender balance will be sought as much as possible in the selection of applications. Priority will be given to applicants already employed in public institutions (either at local or at central level) responsible for the safeguarding and management of cultural heritage.

Selected candidates will be entitled to participate free of charge and will receive free board and lodging in Zadar during the course, as well as a textbook, work overalls and t-shirt.

Applications and accompanying documents must be sent per email in electronic form to ICUA Zadar (to the attention of Antonija Jozić at ajozic(at)icua.hr) with copy to the UNESCO Venice Office (to the attention of Matteo Rosati, m.rosati(at)unesco.org).Only applications sent no later than 2 October, 12.30 pm. will be considered.

The International Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar was designated a regional centre (category 2) under the auspices of UNESCO in recognition of the urgent need to preserve and protect such heritage, UNESCO elaborated in 2001 the Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage. Croatia was among the first countries to ratify the Convention.
