Director-General meets with the President of Ethiopia, Mr Mulatu Teshome Wirtu

On 23 March, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, met with the President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Mr Mulatu Teshome Wirtu.

She congratulated him for his election in October 2013, as President of Ethiopia, and provided an overview of UNESCO’s work and collaboration with his country in the Organization’s five domains. She also congratulated the President for the progress his country has achieved and noted Ethiopia’s contribution to the Steering Committee of the Global Education First Initiative as a member. She thanked the President for the excellent collaboration in the areas of teacher training, TVET, biodiversity and heritage, among others.  

The President welcomed the Director-General  and noted his appreciation of the excellent relations between his country and UNESCO. He noted that Ethiopia will follow a “green growth” model and is determined to improve the livelihoods and living standards of their citizens.  

In relation to the World heritage Sites, the President informed the Director-General that Ethiopia will do its utmost to protect the sites and to promote a development in line with the UNESCO standards for the cultural sites. He also noted that Ethiopia looks to UNESCO support for sustainable development plans in these areas.  

The President and the Director-General expressed their commitment to deepen relations ever more.
