One of the key figures in Latin American literature, Alejo Carpentier (1904-1980) produced a very important body of work, translated into several languages and appreciated worldwide. He is the creator of the theory of “American magic realism” that has influenced the development of the 20th Century literature. Narrator, critic, journalist, musicologist, essay writer and diplomat, he was the first Cuban and ibero-american to receive the Cervantes Award, the highest distinction in Spanish literature. Alejo Carpentier was a Renaissance Man of the twentieth century.
