George Sand (1804-1876) is among the greatest writers of the nineteenth century. Her work covers the major political, social and aesthetic issues of her century. In addition to her search for new forms of style and language she was, in her time, one of the women most committed to women’s rights and social justice. She was also deeply concerned with issues of democracy and the need for mass education.
