King Mongkut (1804-1868) was an outstanding personality in his own country and beyond it inasmuch as he kept the Thai realm out of the reach of foreign powers. At the same time, he modernized his country introducing scientific technologies and innovations in many fields while safeguarding the Thai culture through its spirituality by promoting research and studies on Buddhism and its sacred texts and languages. He also endeavoured to free his people from slavery, which was an ancient practice, and provide for widespread education for all social categories.
