Director-General denounces killing of magazine editor Raghavendra Dube in India

The Director-General of UNESCO today condemned the killing of Raghavendra Dube, owner and editor of a local weekly magazine in Bombay, India.

“I condemn the killing of Raghavendra Dube,” the Director-General said. “Crimes against media workers constitute a violation of freedom of expression, a basic human right and undermine the freedom of professionals and the public to share information. I look forward to the authorities investigating this crime and ensuring effective justice.”

Raghavendra Dube, owner and editor of the local weekly Khushboo Ujala, was killed in the early hours of 17 July in Bombay.

The Director-General of UNESCO issues statements on the killing of media workers in line with Resolution 29 adopted by UNESCO Member States at the Organization’s General Conference of 1997, entitled “Condemnation of Violence against Journalists.” These statements are posted on a dedicated webpage, UNESCO condemns the killing of journalists.
