The Paris Plage came alive as Chau dancers, baul singers, patachitra artists, and craftspeople from West Bengal showcased their performances and artworks at this summer event in Paris on July 28. The 20 participating artists also got an opportunity to present their works at another event held at UNESCO Headquarters on the same evening. These events were part of the various activities being conducted in the ‘Rural Craft Hub’ project, a collaboration between the NGO banglanatak dot com, Department of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises and Textiles (MSSE&T) of Government of West Bengal, and UNESCO. 

The project seeks to demonstrate how culture and cultural skills can be an important basis for bringing about socio-economic development in rural areas in India. The exposure visit to France was another important momentum in the capacity building and promotion of rural artists.

Mr Engida Getachew, Deputy Director-General of UNESCO, while welcoming the artists and the audience, underlined the crucial mandate of UNESCO to inscribe culture in post-2015 Millennium Development Goals and how a project such as this one is important to demonstrate the effective linkage between culture and development.  

पेरिस में पश्चिम बंगाल

पश्चिम बंगाल के छऊ नर्तकों, बाउल गायकों, पटचित्र कलाकारों और शिल्पियों ने 28 जुलाई को पेरिस में इस ग्रीष्म आयोजन में अपने प्रदर्शनों और कलाकृतियों से पेरिस प्लेग को जीवंत कर दिया। आयोजन में शामिल 20 भागीदारों को उसी शाम यूनेस्को मुख्यालय में हुए एक और कार्यक्रम में अपनी कला को पेश करने का मौका भी मिला। ये कार्यक्रम ‘ग्रामीण शिल्प केंद्र (रूरल क्राफ्ट हब)’ परियोजना के तहत संचालित होने वाली विभिन्न गतिविधियों का हिस्सा थे। यह परियोजना एनजीओ बंगलानाटक डॉट कॉम, पश्चिम बंगाल सरकार के डिपार्टमेंट ऑफ माइक्रो, स्मॉल एंड मीडियम एंटरप्राइज एंड टेक्स्टाइल (एमएसएलईएंडटी) और यूनेस्को की आपसी सहभागिता से चलाई जा रही है।

परियोजना का मकसद यह दिखाना है कि कैसे संस्कृति और सांस्कृतिक कौशल भारत के ग्रामीण इलाकों में सामाजिक-आर्थिक विकास को साकार करने का एक अहम आधार हो सकते हैं। अनुभव के लिहाज से किया गया फ्रांस का यह दौरा ग्रामीण कलाकारों के क्षमता निर्माण और प्रोत्साहन में आगे की दिशा में एक और अहम कदम था।

यूनेस्को के उप महानिदेशक मि. एनगिदा गाताचेव ने कलाकारों और दर्शकों का स्वागत करते हुए, 2015 के बाद के सहस्राब्दी विकास लक्ष्यों में संस्कृति को दर्ज करने में यूनेस्को के इस अहम दायित्व को रेखांकित किया और इस पर भी रोशनी डाली कि कैसे इस तरह की एक परियोजना संस्कृति और विकास के बीच कारगर सूत्रों को प्रदर्शित करने के लिए महत्वपूर्ण है।
