On 3 April 2014, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, was awarded with the High State Award, the Order of Dostyk (Order of Friendship), from the Republic of Kazakhstan, for the promotion of peace, friendship and cooperation.

“I accept this as a sign of confidence in UNESCO, as a sign of commitment to the values we share, to our joint efforts to build lasting peace and sustainable development,” said the Director-General.

“Peace. Friendship. Cooperation. These words embody the Order of Dostyk – they also express the essence of UNESCO’s mission,” she continued. “This mission builds on the idea that peace must be nurtured through the dignity, rights and capacities of every woman and man. It is a way of being, a way of interacting with others, a way of living on this planet.”

The award was conferred by Mr Imangali Tasmagambetov, Mayor of Astana and Chairman of the National Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan for UNESCO, in the presence of Mr Nurlan Danenov, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Kazakhstan to UNESCO.

The award ceremony was preceded by a bilateral talk between the Director-General and Mr Tasmagambetov, during which they have exchanged views on the current state of cooperation between UNESCO and Kazakhstan and on its future perspectives.
