Director General on an official visit to the Republic of Kazakhstan

UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova is on an official visit to the Republic of Kazakhstan from the 28th – 31st of May. The Director-General met with H.E. Mr. Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, H.E. Mr. Kairat Mami, Chairman of the Senate of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Head of the Secretariat of the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions, H.E. Mr. Imangali Tasmagambetov, Chairman of the National Commission, and several heads of the Kazakhstan Federation of UNESCO Clubs.

During the visit, Irina Bokova participated, as an honorary guest, at the IV Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions, on the theme of “Peace and Harmony as a Choice of Humankind.” In her intervention, the Director-General underlined UNESCO’s longstanding role in strengthening “the intellectual and moral solidarity of mankind” through intercultural dialogue.

The Director-General also participated in an official ceremony on the establishment of the Central Asian Regional Glaciological Center as a UNESCO Category 2 center. The Central Asian Regional Glaciological Center is established at the Institute of Geography of Kazakhstan with the aim to support the sustainable management of the region’s water resources.

Irina Bokova also attended an exhibition of the Kazakhstan National Federation of UNESCO Clubs.
