Director-General on Official Visit to Kazakhstan

From 22 to 24 August, the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, is on an official visit to Kazakhstan, where she will participate in the International Forum devoted to the official launch of the International Decade for the Rapprochement of Cultures (2013-2022).

This International Decade, under the leadership of UNESCO, will build on the 2010 International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures – an initiative that Kazakhstan co-sponsored, which UNESCO led.

The Director-General will participate in the opening and closing sessions of the Forum, alongside the Chairperson of the National Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan for UNESCO, Imangali Tasmagambetov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Erlan Idrissov, the UN Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations, Nassir al-Nasser, and the Director General of ISESCO, Abdulaziz Altwaijiri. The Director-General will also take part in the Plenary Session, entitled “Rapprochement and Dialogue as the Major Source for Building Peace and Attaining a Sustainable Future”.

While in Kazakhstan, the Director-General will present the UNESCO Diploma for the Alakol Biosphere Reserve, added to UNESCO’s World Biosphere Reserve Network in 2013.

In Kazakhstan, the Director-General will sign an agreement establishing a UNESCO Chair on Ethnic and Religious Tolerance at the Eurasian National University.

Irina Bokova will also designate the world famous boxer, Serik Sapiyev, as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Sport.
