Four international conferences in 2015 on prevention of genocide and Holocaust education

UNESCO and the Aladdin Project, a non-governmental organization in partnership with UNESCO that promotes intercultural dialogue, are planning four conferences for 2015 in the Caucasus (Baku, Azerbaijan), Central Asia (Astana, Kazakhstan), West Africa, Dakar, Senegal) and North Africa (Rabat, Morocco).

The aim of this cycle of conferences, announced on the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp, is to encourage discussion about Holocaust education and the prevention of genocide in different regions of the world. They will also provide the occasion to reflect on the lessons learned from the Holocaust, 70 years after the Second World War and to exchange opinions and ideas concerning historical revisionism (negationism) and the lack of knowledge about the history and origins of the Holocaust. Participants, including educators and political decision-makers, will share experiences and propose strategies for overcoming hurdles encountered in this area.

With the support of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), UNESCO and the Aladdin project intend pursuing their efforts to promote a culture of peace by revising teaching programmes, and providing training on prevention and conflict resolution, dialogue and the pursuit of consensus and active non-violence.

The Aladdin Project was launched in March 2009 by the Fondation pour la Memoire de la Shoah, and placed under UNESCO’s patronage. Based in France, it brings together intellectuals and personalities from political and diplomatic spheres, and associations from the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. Serving as a link between cultures, it makes information on the Shoah, Jewish-Muslim relations and Jewish culture available in Arabic, Persian and Turkish.
