Director-General meets President of Malta in New York

On 24 September, UNESCO Director-General met H.E. Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, President of the Republic of Malta, in New York, in the context of the UN Summit on Sustainable Development and the 70th session of the UN General Assembly‎.

President Coleiro Preca spoke of the importance of bridging exclusion, living together and dialogue in all societies today. She underlined the activities of the newly launched Foundation for Well-Being in Society, in Malta, with a focus on providing spaces for children of all backgrounds to exchange and share. 

"We have all shades and colors in Malta," said the President stressing the crucial role of children and youth as "the roots of society," and requested cooperation with UNESCO to share experiences and support the Foundation's work. 

In that context, the President also noted the possible cooperation between Malta, UNESCO and ISESCO, building on Malta's unique place and experience in the Mediterranean.

The Director-General thanked the President for the engagement of Malta in UNESCO, and welcomed the experience of the Foundation. She underlined UNESCO's actions across the world to engage with young people, especially with the marginalised, as well as with girls, through quality education as well as such projects as NetMed Youth across the region.

‎The Director-General welcomed the proposal for cooperation and looked forward to exploring how to share the experience of Malta, and take forward the goals of living together and social well-being.
