Irina Bokova on an Official Visit to Angola

From 4 to 5 April, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova went go on an official visit to Angola, where she is met with the President of the Republic José Eduardo dos Santos and several government officials. This visit coincides with the 10th anniversary of the peace agreement signed in Luanda, on 4 April 2002.

During her visit, the Director-General also met with women parliamentarians, with whom she underlined the important role that women play in fostering cultural diversity and social cohesion to build peace. “Women have a vital role to play, as they played a crucial role for the mediation and reconciliation after 27 years of war,” said the Director-General referring to the experience of Angolan women and how it could benefit women in other countries.  

The Director-General also met with the students and the rector of Agostinho Neto University, where a UNESCO Chair in Chemical and Environmental Engineering was established in 1994. At the University, the Director-General discussed the importance of quality higher education and learning skills to shape the world for the benefit of all, to create peace and work for sustainable development.

The Director-General also underscored the importance of universities in their “essential humanist vocation – to advance human dignity through knowledge that is created and shared for social development and social inclusion”.
