Mauritius contributes $20,000 to UNESCO’s Emergency Fund

On 30 October 2012, the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, and H.E. Jacques Chasteau de Balyon, Ambassador of Republic of Mauritius to UNESCO, signed an agreement to formalize a $ 20,000 contribution from the Government of the Republic of Mauritius to the UNESCO’s Multi-Donor Emergency Fund.

The Director-General expressed her gratitude to the Government for this generous contribution, underlining the importance of the political and moral support provided by the Republic of Mauritius, especially in the current challenging situation that UNESCO is facing. She highlighted that UNESCO has a role to play in a changing world and would remain mobilized, across its mandate, to help Member States. With regard to the particular challenges faced by Small Island Developing States, she underlined the importance of UNESCO’s role in advocating for and developing policies in favour of sustainable development and adaptation to climate change as well as UNESCO’s contribution to implementing the outcomes of Rio + 20.

Ambassador Jacques Chasteau de Balyon reiterated the sincere appreciation of his Government for the important role played by UNESCO and confirmed that his Government will remain a staunch supporter of the Organization. The contribution by Mauritius to UNESCO’s Emergency Fund is a demonstration of the Government’s commitment to the Organisation.
