In order to accelerate a positive change regarding the access and maintenance of girls to school for the 2015-2016 school year, activities to promote advocacy and awareness will be organized in the Torodi commune from 20 to 23 October, 2015.

The first activity, placed under the patronage of the Primary education of Literacy, National Languages Promotion and Civics Minister, and the Secondary education Minister, aims at ensuring commitments and sensitizing the various actors of education, in particular at the community level, regarding the advantages of schooling for girl students, their parents, and their communities.

Approximately 500 people are expected to participate in this demonstration including the persons in charge of decentralized structures, the central, regional, departmental and local executives of secondary and primary education Ministries, local elected representatives, traditional leaders, teachers and pupils of the municipality, associative structures, and technical and financial partners.

In order to motivate girls to pursue their school program, gifts including school manuals, supplies, a scientific calculator, and a bag will be given to the 36 most deserving female pupils of 10 elementary schools and 4 colleges at the end of the gathering.

Awareness through community radios

After the gathering, community awareness regarding the access and maintenance of girls to school will continue through community radios as part of an awareness caravan that will target religious leaders, elected representatives, girls removed from school, schools managers, teachers, students, and parents.

These activities are in line with the project “Fighting against gender inequalities in the education system in Niger”, which is financed by the Japanese Government and implemented by the Primary and Secondary education Ministries. This project aims to improve the participation of girls and women in education, and to strengthen the education system in Niger for sustainable socioeconomic development.

The gatherings also provide an opportunity to promote the project and to ensure the membership of all participating actors and partners in its implementation.
