Seminar on Science Learning Outcomes: TIMSS Results in the GCC

Within the framework of the QNRF funded project research on “Momentum for Education beyond 2015,” UNESCO Doha in collaboration with the National Commission of UNESCO in Qatar and the Supreme Education Council and Qatar University, held a two-day Seminar on Science Learning Outcomes: TIMSS Results in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) on 11-12 October 2015 at Hotel Intercontinental Doha, Qatar.

The Seminar aimed at

(1) identifying what can the GCC states learn and adopt from other countries to improve learning outcomes with a focus on TIMSS science;

(2) reflecting on lessons learned from the TIMSS Science experience in the GCC states; and

(3) proposing recommendations to enhance the performance of education systems in GCC countries and to increase success rate of students in Science. The Seminar participants identified challenges that need to be addressed to improve the performance of students in upcoming rounds of TIMSS and Policy and strategic recommendations to improve learning outcomes in the GCC.

Dr. Steffen Knoll, resource specialist from the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) in Germany presented a TIMSS Assessment Results in Science: Lessons Learned and Implications for EDU 2030 Agenda. Countries from GCC such as Qatar, Bahrain,Kuwait, and United Arab Emirates also presented their country-specific experiences and reflections on TIMSS findings in Science.

Around thirty participants,including public education officials and policy-makers focusing on learning assessments, TIMSS, and educational quality; principals and science teachers and other education experts attended the Seminar and participated actively in the group work sessions.
