Traditional Knowledge: Wisdom in the Pacific

The Office of the Ombudsman, which acts as Samoa’s National Human Rights Institute, is drafting Samoa’s initial State of Human Rights Report due to parliament in June 2015. A number of consultations with schools have currently been held across the country to undertake a survey the result of which will feed into the Report.

A publication “Traditional Knowledge and Wisdom: Themes from the Pacific Islands” published by ICHCAP, Category II Centre in Rep. of Korea in cooperation with UNESCO have been given out to the participating school to thank their participation in the survey.

This publication compiles informative articles by Pacific island experts on traditional knowledge from selected Pacific island states under five themes: world views, relationships and social cohesion, harvest and landscapes, voyaging and seascapes, art and technology.

Published within the framework of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Safeguarding Programme in the Pacific, the publication sheds light on cultural practices and expressions of the indigenous peoples in the Pacific that have supported the strength of communities and contributed to the unity in diversity in the Pacific.
