Director-General condemns murder of Mozambican journalist Paulo Machava

The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, today called for an investigation into the killing of Diairio de Noticias journalist, Paulo Machava, in Maputo, Mozambique.

“I condemn the murder of Paulo Machava,” the Director-General said. “I call on the authorities of Mozambique to take immediate steps to shed light on this crime. Guns must not be allowed to silence the media and deprive people of information they have a right to receive from a wide range of sources.”

Paulo Machava, editor-in-chief and senior investigative reporter for the Diario de Noticias news website, was shot by unknown assailants on 28 August. He had previously worked for Rádio Moçambique and weekly magazine Savana.

The Director-General of UNESCO issues statements on the killing of media workers in line with Resolution 29 adopted by UNESCO Member States at the Organization’s General Conference of 1997, entitled “Condemnation of Violence against Journalists.” These statements are posted on a dedicated webpage, UNESCO condemns the killing of journalists.
