It’s an undisputable fact that entire cities have been swallowed by waves, and thousands of ships have perished at sea. While these ships, buildings and historical items are not frequently visible on the surface, their remains survived at the bottom of lakes, seas and oceans, safely preserved by the water environment.

The Culture Program activities of the UNESCO Office in Doha focuses on the underwater cultural heritage of the countries of the Gulf Region. The Persian Gulf, Arabian sea and the Red Sea surround the Peninsula, and the underwater environment is not only spectacular, but also has sites dating from the sixth millennium BC. Aware of the tremendous importance of this cultural heritage underwater, UNESCO is collaborating with different entities from the region in order to join efforts to preserve the underwater cultural heritage.
