UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova was on an official visit to the Republic of Togo from 7 to 8 June. The Director-General met with the President of the Republic Faure Gnassingbé and Prime Minister Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo. She also held working meetings with the Minister of Higher Education and Research François Agbéviadé Galley, and ministers in the fields of competences of UNESCO.

The Director-General also met with the United Nations Country Team.

During her visit to Togo, Irina Bokova visited the University of Lomé, which hosts four UNESCO Chairs, three of them devoted to scientific research – renewable energy, geosciences and sustainable development, women and reasoned water management – and one of them to the preservation of African cultural Heritage.

A Joint Communique was signed at the end of the visit specifying the future oppotunities of cooperation between the Togolese Republic and UNESCO, particularly in the areas of education, culture and communication.
