UNESCO biosphere reserves are not only about biodiversity conservation and protection, but are also about people living in a sustainable way with the environment said Dr. Denis Chang Seng, UNESCO Natural Science Programme Specialist for the Pacific States.

As a follow-up activity regarding the co-management training, a street market event was included in the Utwe Liberation Day opening ceremony which was held on Tuesday, September 8th 2015 at the Utwe Municipal Office. On this 8th day, farmers, fishers, and community members gathered at the opening ceremony to witness the winners of the farming and fishing competition and also to participate in the street market event. Around fifty farmers and fishers were involved in the competitions. Other community members participated in the street market event. Gift certificates were given to the winners of each competition as incentives. These gift certificates were issued only in Utwe to support local businesses around the community. At the end of the day, the Mayor Hon. Patterson Benjamin extended his utmost appreciation on behalf of the community to UNECSO for its continuous supports to towards the UBR. The school awareness program has started. Field trips to the UBR core zone is scheduled but has not been carried out yet.

UNESCO is supporting Kosrae Conservation and Safety Organization (KCSO) to raise awareness activities for the Utwe Biosphere Reserve (UBR) community in the Federated States of Micronesia to refresh understanding of co-management roles toward effective conservation and sustainable development in the UBR.
