Director-General’s First Official Visit to Tajikistan

On the occasion of the International High-Level Conference on Water Cooperation held in Dushanbe, the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, will undertake her first official visit to Tajikistan from 20 to 22 August. This visit will also occur on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Tajikistan membership to UNESCO.

The Conference, organized at the initiative of the Government of Tajikistan, is held within the framework of the International Year of Water Cooperation, approved by the UN General Assembly, and led by UNESCO.

The Director-General will take part in the opening of the Conference together with the President of Tajikistan, Emomalii Rahmon, and other high-level officials, including UN-Water Chair, Michel Jarraud, Tajikistan’s Minister for Economic Development and Trade, Sharif Rahimzoda, Uganda’s Water Minister, Flavia Nabugere, and the Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), Sven Alkalaj.

During her visit to Tajikistan, the Director-General is expected to hold bilateral meetings with the President of the Republic, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Culture.

The Director-General will visit the National Library of Tajikistan, where she will inaugurate the UNESCO Corner. She will also visit the Tajikistan National Park, inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2013.
