UNESCO and Turkmenistan Sign Framework Agreement
On 16 July 2015, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova signed a framework agreement with Turkmenistan to establish a Turkmenistan-UNESCO Trust Fund. The USD 5 million agreement was signed with H.E Rashid Meredov, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, Minister for Foreign Affairs.
Priority areas covered under the agreement include peace and intercultural dialogue, education, cultural heritage, rapprochement of cultures and the 70th anniversary of UNESCO. The agreement also provides a basis for developing programmes in the above areas on the territory of Turkmenistan.
During the ceremony, Irina Bokova offered her sincere appreciation to Turkmenistan for its generous support to the Organization. She stressed the critical importance of tackling the global problem of extremism through intercultural dialogue.
Mr Meredov underscored the commitment of Turkmenistan to the ideas and values of UNESCO, and the wish to share the experience of Turkmenistan in the priority areas covered by the Agreement.
