Director-General’s official visit to Andorra

From 20 to 21 July, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova is undertaking an official visit to Andorra on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Andorra’s membership to UNESCO and the 10th anniversary of the inscription of Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

The Director-General is expected to meet with the Head of the Government of the Principality of Andorra, H.E. Mr Antoni Martí, and several high level government representatives, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr Gilbert Saboya, the Minister of Education and Youth, H.E. Ms Roser Suñé and the Minister of Culture, H.E. Mr Albert Esteve.

The Director-General will also visit Casa de la Vall and meet with the President of Parliament. She is also expected to meet with members of the National Commission of Andorra to UNESCO.

The visit is programmed to coincide with the fourth edition of Art Camp, a project under the auspices of UNESCO that aims at bringing together artists from around the world to promote cultural and artistic exchange.  Art Camp, located in Ordino in the North-West of Andorra, is actively contributing to better understanding between countries that have seen violence, war and conflict through the sharing of art and culture in a spirit of mutual respect.

The Director-General will be accompanied by UNESCO Artist for Peace, Ms. Hedva Ser, the patron of the initiative, The Mayor of Ordino, H.E. Mr. Ventura Espot and the Minister of Culture of Andorra will also be in attendance. Hedva Ser, French sculptor and painter, was named UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2011 in recognition of her contribution to promoting tolerance and intercultural dialogue through art and her dedication to the ideals of the Organization. In Ordino, the Director-General will also take part in the inauguration of the sculpture by Hedva Ser, “Tree of Peace”.
