UNESCO Director-General Laureate of the Prestigious Mostar Peace Connection Award

On the occasion of the celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the inscription of the Old Bridge area of the Old City of Mostar on the World Heritage List, UNESCO Director-General, Ms Irina Bokova, was honoured with the prestigious Mostar Peace Connection Award, which was officially awarded to Ms Bokova by the Mayor of Mostar, Mr Ljubo Bešlić and Mr Safet Oručević, Chairman for Peace and Multi-Ethnic Cooperation Mostar.

The award was established by the Mostar Peace Centre in 2004, following the reconstruction of the Old Bridge of Mostar, to encourage the efforts of all those who promote the ideas of peace, democracy and respect for human rights in their opinions and public actions.

Upon receiving award, the Director-General stated: “I am deeply moved to be designated 2015 laureate of the prestigious Mostar Peace Connection Award. It is a great honour to become the first woman to receive this award and to be honoured with this prestigious award from my region, to join the company of such luminaries as Nelson Mandela, Vaclav Havel, Alojz Mock and Mohammad El Baradei”.
