On 6 June, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, was acknowledged as honorary member of the Council of Business Women in Bulgaria in recognition of her activities and achievements in improving women’s and girls’ education, promoting gender equality, and supporting young people. Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff is among the holders of this distinction.

At the meeting with the Council members, the Director-General has accepted to grant her patronage to the International Conference on Women, which the Council of Business Women in Bulgaria plans to organize in Sofia early next year.

Women's organizations from around the world will be invited to the forum to review successful practices of women entrepreneurs and to deliberate on how to promote the role of women in management and business.

Addressing the Council of Business Women, the Director-General underlined that in all its activities UNESCO aims to promote the education of young girls and women, gender equality and greater representation of women in science, education and media.
