On 6 June, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova was a special guest at the celebration of the 20th anniversary of Zonta Club-Sofia, which is part of Zonta International - a leading global organization seeking to empower women worldwide through service and advocacy.

Over the past two decades, Zonta Club-Sofia has worked to promote the ideals of UNESCO through projects in support of disadvantaged people, contributing through this action also to the formation of the modern civil society in Bulgaria.

“Gender equality, which is one of the global priorities of UNESCO, is integrated into all programs of the Organization, because we are convinced that it is the most powerful force for building sustainable societies. I am convinced that women’s equality is the theme of the 21st century,” said Irina Bokova in her address to the members of the club.

“I am confident that Zonta Club Sofia will remain committed to the principles of Zonta International and will continue to conduct charity initiatives and programs in support of women, children and socially disadvantaged families, to eliminate violence against women and to advance their rights. In this year, when states are shaping the new global sustainable development agenda, we need to support the empowerment of women as a transformational force for economic growth, social progress and peace”, she concluded.
