« Rethinking Education » at the European Education Exposition (Paris, 20 November, 2015)

In light of the adoption of the Education 2030 Agenda, encapsulated in the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the UNESCO French National Commission and the French League for Education are hosting a round table on UNESCO’s “Rethinking Education: towards a global common good”.

The round table is taking place at the European Education Exposition on Friday 20 November from 3:15pm to 5pm (Forum Jean Macé level 7-2 at Paris Expo, Porte de Versailles).

Chaired by Daniel Janicot, Honorary Counselor of State, former UNESCO Assistant Director-General and President of the French National Commission for UNESCO, the round table will bring together Professor Georges Haddad, former Director of UNESCO’s Research and Foresight in Education; Florence Robine, Director-General for Schools, French Ministry of Education; Nathalie Mons, Professor of Sociology, University of Cergy-Pontoise and President of the National Council for school system evaluation and Lydia Ruprecht, team leader for Global Citizenship Education at UNESCO.

“Rethinking Education” is a normative reference to help contextualize the Education 2030 goal to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning for all by 2030. It is the fruit of the work of a Senior Experts’ Group established by UNESCO’s Director-General Irina Bokova to rethink education in a new global context of learning.

Professor Georges Haddad, who initiated the work of the Group, states “this publication exists to be debated and analyzed at all levels of education”. 

The publication is a call for policy dialogue on the principles that govern education in the current context of change, complexity and uncertainty. It is also a call for public debate on the purpose and organization of education as a collective endeavour and responsibility.  As points out the co-chair of the Senior Experts’ Group Professor John Morgan, “this is a short book on a big topic”.

“There is no more powerful transformative force than education – to promote human rights and dignity, to eradicate poverty and deepen sustainability, to build a better future for all... This is why we must think big again and re-vision education in a changing world. For this, we need debate and dialogue across the board, and that is the goal of this publication – to be both aspirational and inspirational, to speak to new times”, states UNESCO’s Director-General Irina Bokova.
