Workshop in Abidjan focuses on learning to live together through history education

Curriculum experts from ten African countries came together for a consultation workshop entitled "Learning to live together in Africa through History teaching, an assessment of current practices and future prospects ", in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire from 26 to 27 November, 2015
At the workshop organized by UNESCO and the George Eckert Institute, experts from Côte d’Ivoire, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, South Africa, Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea, Ethiopia and Nigeria identified good practices in the promotion of learning to live together, respect for diversity, dialogue, mutual understanding and social cohesion through History education.
They underscored the importance of strengthening the status of history education and effectively exploiting its potential to promote the goal of learning to live together.
They also made recommendations to integrate education content developed by UNESCO on the General History of Africa into the curricula under the supervision of a scientific committee of African experts.
UNESCO and partners are committed to support State parties in the implementation of recommendations which aim at using history of Africa education as a vector of unity and cohesion across the continent.
