DAKAR

Culture

The priorities of Breda in culture are the following:

    1. Promoting cultural diversity through the safeguarding of heritage in all its dimensions and enhancement of cultural expressions

    2. Promoting social cohesion by fostering pluralism and dialogue among cultures and building a culture of peace.

The Culture sector of UNESCO is working to meet these priorities by taking into account the specificities and particularities of each country. In the case of the UNESCO office in Dakar, these countries are: Senegal, Cape Verde, Gambia and Guinea-Bissau.

It is now an undeniable fact that no human society can not develop harmoniously without taking the option of building its own development on its own values of civilization. Since culture is a vehicle for growth and welfare, it can not be considered for its value until it is re-appropriated by the people and recognized as a real factor of development.

The emphasis is placed on thematic research and activities for the following categories:
    Tangible Heritage
    Archives and Oral Tradition,
    Museums,
    Traditional Knowledge,
    Diversity and Intercultural Dialogue,
    the Slave Route
    and
    Interreligious Dialogue.
