Margarita Popova

Vice-President of the Republic of Bulgaria

Vice President of the Republic of Bulgaria from January 2012, after being elected. Born in 1956, she received a master’s degree in Bulgarian Philology, with a minor in German, and a master’s degree in Law from Sofia University. From 1996 to 2004 she was the administrative head of the District Prosecutor's Office in Sofia. From 2005 to 2009, she was a full-time professor and lecturer at the National Institute of Justice. In 2007, after a competition, she was appointed to the office of prosecutor at the Supreme Cassation Prosecutor's Office, and from 2008 to 2009 managed the department for combating and investigation of crimes against the EU financial system. From 2009 to 2012 she was Minister of Justice. Mrs. Popova has specialized in the fields of prevention of transnational organized crime and anti-corruption. In 2012 she was elected as a Chairperson and Board member of International Anti-Corruption Academy.
