Culture and Development

Traditional Weaving (Sri Lanka)

Can development be achieved without its cultural root?

Cultural heritage does not always find its place in the on-going development discourse in South-Asia. There is a persistent view that heritage constitutes an obstacle to development, or traditional knowledge is backward.

UNESCO questions this typical misconception and seeks to explore how to make the development process friendly to cultural heritage.  More importantly, it explores the way to boost development process and people’s well-being through cultural heritage.
