Objectives and expected results

The project aims to promote and encourage poetic creation among the Colombian youth. Over 80 artists, including poets, musicians and actors, participated in the Festival and approximately 35,000 participants attended. The project is in line with the IFPC’s priorities, notably by

  • Supporting youth aged 18-32 years old: to encourage the participation of young poets, two poetry prizes were supported by the IFPC, namely the Metropolitan Poetry Prize and the National Poetry Prize. A total of 300 young people participated in the two contests, and 4 winners, authors of four collections of poems, were selected and awarded the prizes. 60% of the participants were young people aged between 16-32 years old.

  • Promoting gender equality: the festival encouraged the equal participation of men and women poets, fostering dialogue, diversity, intercultural connections and inclusion, in processes for the sociocultural and spiritual renewal of the community.

  • Promoting and encouraging creativity within the Colombian youth: among the various activities held during the festival, the realization of poetry workshop sessions addressed to young writers of the metropolitan area of “Valle de Aburra”, allowed participants to enlarge their knowledge in presenting poetry. It also provided a space for them to exchange and discuss on works of authors and movements essential to contemporary poetry.

About the beneficiaries

"The River [poetry workshop] has been, for me, a flow of inspiration, a meeting of paths through language taken by the youth of Medellin who have found their essence [...] It has made me a great reader of poetry, this year, I have passionately read various authors, as is the case with Pessoa Poetry which enriches our universe and fills it with possibilities.

Today, thanks in large part to The River, I speak with great confidence about my poetic perceptions, though they be contradictory, and about ideas that spring from contemporary poetry. This enriches my life, because I am not tied to a particular discourse, because I can connect with myself more and with what I am and with what I think. This is because I convert my symbolic world into poems that I share with others, infecting them at times with this poetic spirit. This makes me happy. Also, I have found great unity and beautiful friendship with almost all of the people in The River."
