Brief project description
The annual Carnival, held on the third Saturday of very March, consists of 13 pods made up of a "float", lead dancers, an Academy of dancers/performers and a music troupe. The 13 different pods represent the diverse cultural performance genres and music types of South Africa and Africa.
Objectives and expected results
The project aimed to promote and sustain arts and culture; notably dance, music, and performance as well as to create employment and training opportunities in costume, float design and construction, craft design and production and logistics of large events. The main’s objective was to facilitate dance, drumming, and other live music rehearsals and performances through the Carnival. Jobs were created for a total of 40 young people aged 18-30 years old in building floats (float, props and other art work production) and making costumes (costume, head pieces, craft and accessory design).

About the beneficiaries
Tauriq-Aziz joined the Carnival in 2011 and has progressed from being a high school leaver with no previous work experience and grim employment prospects to being one of the most valued members of the costume team. One of the most wonderful things about Tauriq-Aziz is his desire to pass on the skills he has learnt to the youth in his community. He spends a great amount of time showing them how to make their own hats and garments from available fabric and material cutoffs.
