The Guidelines for Implementing Information Accessibility in Learning (ICT4IAL) are now available in 23 languages providing practical solutions for the preparation and sharing of accessible information for persons with disabilities and their teachers for learning and training purposes. The set of recommendations provide practical information on how to prepare the accessible text, image, audio, video, and media files.

The procedure for creating and sharing accessible information is universal. However, there are numerous educational resources available in electronic formats and shared using various media channels which are not designed respecting information accessibility requirements. Providing information that is not accessible creates an additional barriers for learners with disabilities.

The Guidelines for Accessible Information are an open educational resource (OER) to support the creation of accessible information in general and for learning in particular. It summarizes and provides links to existing and useful resources which can be helpful for non-information and communication technologies experts.

The Guidelines were developed within the context of the ICT for All Information Accessible for Learning (ICT4IAL) project which is a multi-disciplinary network of European and International partners that represent both learning and ICT communities:

The ICT for Information Accessibility in Learning (ICT4IAL) project was awarded a grant by the European Commission under the Lifelong Learning Transversal Programme, Key Activity 3: Information and Communication Technology.

The Partner Advisory Group met for its final meeting on 10-11 December 2015 in Milano, Italy to conclude the development phase and share final results with academic audience during the International seminar entitled “Information Accessibility for Learning: From Development to Implementation of Guidelines” hosted by the Politecnico di Milano.

In his opening statement, Mr Indrajit Banerjee, Director of Knowledge Societies, Communication and Information Sector, UNESCO said that “With massive power of outreach, the ICT4IAL Guidelines are an openly available resource with translations in twenty-three languages and few more are underway, providing instructions and resources on how to create accessible materials with text, image, audio and video, which can be applied to all types of information produced around the world”.

Other speakers of the International Seminar discussed the implementation of the ICT4IAL Guidelines in different learning contexts, explored further ways of its application, shared experience in promoting information accessibility in academic life and legislative aspects of the Copyright and Open Access policies.

The Guidelines in 23 languages can be downloaded here. The Guidelines in Arabic, Chinese and Russian will be made available online soon.
