UNESCO and the World Underwater Federation (CMAS) join forces to safeguard underwater cultural heritage.

Divers get to experience underwater cultural heritage first hand, and they are often the first people to discover and interact with sites on the seabed. UNESCO and CMAS agree that the education and involvement of divers in the protection and enjoyment of this precious underwater heritage is crucial. It is considered a significant element of the new underwater cultural heritage protection management model developed in accordance with the 2001 Convention.

UNESCO and CMAS will endeavour to make divers aware of the fragile nature of submerged heritage and the need to follow the UNESCO Code of Ethics when diving on such underwater archaeological sites. The education and committment of new and experienced divers around the world will help to safeguard that part of human history that is hidden on the bed of our oceans.
